"Delta Tutorial" Project

A DLF Initiative to Combat School Dropouts through Community-Led Coaching

1. Introduction

In rural Bangladesh, many students from underprivileged families fall behind in their studies because their parents are often unable to provide academic guidance at home. Private coaching is an unaffordable luxury for them. As a result, these students lose interest in education and eventually drop out to join the labor force. Delta Tutorial is designed to bridge this gap by providing free evening academic support within the safe environment of rural libraries.

2. The Core Concept

Delta Tutorial is not a formal school, but a community-based "Evening Support Center." It operates under the supervision of a nearby library associated with the Delta Pathagar Forum (DLF). It serves as a bridge between school hours and home, ensuring that poverty does not translate into academic failure.

3. Key Objectives

  • Reduce Dropout Rates: To prevent students from leaving school due to poor academic performance or lack of guidance.

  • Academic Strengthening: To help students understand their school lessons, complete homework, and prepare for exams.

  • Safe Learning Environment: To utilize the library space during evening hours for productive educational activities.

  • Empowering Local Youth: To involve local educated youth as "Tutors," fostering a sense of social responsibility.

4. Implementation Strategy

  • Location: Tutorials will be hosted in or adjacent to the libraries under the DLF network, specifically in high-poverty zones.

  • Target Group: Students from classes 1 to 8 (primary and junior secondary) whose families fall below the poverty line.

  • The Model: * Time: 2 hours every evening (e.g., 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM).

    • Tutors: Local college/university students or retired teachers who receive a small honorarium or work as volunteers.

    • Curriculum: Focused on core subjects like Mathematics, English, and Science.

5. Why It Is Unique

  • Library Integration: Unlike traditional coaching, it encourages students to become library members, exposing them to newspapers and general literature.

  • Zero Cost to Parents: The program is entirely free for the students, removing the financial burden of "private tuition."

  • Community Watch: Since it is managed by the local library committee, there is a high level of accountability and community trust.

6. Expected Impact

  • Improved Grades: A noticeable improvement in the school results of participating students.

  • Increased Confidence: Poor students will feel more confident in the classroom as they are no longer "behind" their peers.

  • Social Change: By keeping children in the "Tutorials," we keep them away from child labor and early marriage.

7. Sustainability & Support

Delta Tutorial seeks support for:

  • Tutor Honorariums: To sustain the motivation of the local teachers.

  • Stationery Kits: Providing pens, notebooks, and basic teaching aids (whiteboards/markers).

  • Light & Comfort: Ensuring the tutorial has adequate lighting (solar/battery back-up) for evening study.

8. Summary for Donors:

Delta Tutorial is more than just a class; it is a lifeline. By investing in a child’s evening studies today, we are preventing a dropout tomorrow. We don’t just teach; we ensure they stay in school.
